Piriformis Blocks New York, NY

Piriformis Blocks

The piriformis muscles connect the lower spine to the top of the femurs, or thigh bones, on each side, assisting with hip, joint and leg movement. Underneath these small muscles, the sciatic nerves travel down from the lower spine through the pelvis to each leg. When the piriformis muscles are inflamed or tightening with spasms, they can irritate the sciatic nerves and cause sciatica. For sciatic nerve pain relief, Ospina Medical offers piriformis blocks at our clinic in Midtown Manhattan.

The sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body, running from the lumbar spine through the buttocks and legs. When these large nerves are pinched or under pressure, they can cause sciatica symptoms. These can include:

  • Pain in the lower back, buttocks and legs, usually on one side
  • Shooting pain, burning or tingling through the buttocks and legs, usually on one side
  • Numbness or weakness in one hip or leg

Sciatica can be caused by irritation of the nerve from lumbar back conditions, but it can also be affected by muscles and joints in the pelvis region. This includes the piriformis muscles that stretch over the sciatic nerves.

Sciatica Pain Relief

If sciatica pain is caused by an injured or spasming piriformis muscle, treating the muscle at the source is an effective option to relieve symptoms. Our interventional pain physicians at Ospina Medical can perform a piriformis block, an injection of local anesthesia and steroids into the affected piriformis muscle. This injection will numb the area and administer anti-inflammatory steroids to the muscle to relieve inflammation and spasms. This reduces pressure on the affected sciatic nerve and relieves the sciatica pain.

If you have sciatica and localized hip pain, come see us at Ospina Medical. You may have inflammation in your piriformis muscle that is putting pressure on a sciatic nerve. Contact our clinic in New York City to schedule a consultation with one of our pain management specialists for diagnosis and treatment.
